Eligibility Criteria for Graduate Fellowships for STEM Diversity

Employers at GFSD choose fellows based on the following factors, in no particular order:

Whether the applicant’s topic of study corresponds to the needs of the business
Coursework and grades at the undergraduate and graduate levels


Experience conducting research at a university or in the industry
Recommendation letters from instructors and employers. These can be crucial. Letters from people who have supervised or observed the applicant’s participation in research are the most beneficial.
The GRE The general tests are necessary; the subject tests are recommended but may be required by your university.
Employers examine the pool of applicants using these criteria and notify GFSD of whose students they desire to assist. GFSD then gives the award.

Award Benefits

Duration: Depending on the employer-sponsor, initial support could last two to three or six years. If the initial support is shorter, it may be extended for up to six years at the employer’s option.

Amount: The annual charge to the business for each student supported is $27,000, of which $20,000 is the fellow’s cost allowance and $7,000 is the GFSD’s operating fee. The GFSD Board of Directors can adjust the charge at any time.

  • Research Projects List 
  • GRE General & Subject Test Scores 
  • 2-5 recommendations

You must select one of the following organizations to co-review your Application: the National Security Agency, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, or Sandia National Laboratories. If you are awarded the fellowship, you must complete a summer internship (with competitive pay) with that organization sometime during your fellowship. Furthermore, if you decide to leave academia after obtaining your Ph.D., you must evaluate a job offer from that agency in good faith.


The GFSD fellowship program provides three major advantages:

1. Graduate fellowship stipend:

The initial period of support ranges from one to three years. If development is good and the terms of the grant are met, help may be extended for up to six years (depending on the sponsoring agency). Students often apply as seniors in college or during their first year of graduate school. (Certain firms may need a postdoctoral work commitment in exchange for continued support.)

2. Internship opportunities at federal agencies:

You can undertake cutting-edge research at government agencies like the NSA or NIST. Depending on the sponsoring agency, you may be required to go through security clearance. In addition, several organizations need summer internships for fellowships to be extended.

3. Community:

You will be a member of a supportive network of current and former fellows/alums. Our alums are leaders and experts in various fields, and they are eager to assist!

The information required for graduate school admission is on the online application: degrees achieved and expected, employment and internship history, grades (self-entered and later validated), GRE scores, references, personal statement, and so on. The Fellowship covers tuition and expenses as well as an annual stipend.
